GMA 7 won the battle against ABC 5 for acquiring the Idol franchise of Fremantle Media. The latter station has successfully aired the first season of Philippine Idol last year and crowned Mau Marcelo as the first Philippine Idol. But since the acquisition of Idol trademark has been transferred to GMA 7, it will not recognize the first season of Philippine Idol. As a matter of fact, they renamed the contest into “Pinoy Idol.” It is saddening to know that Mau Marcelo will not be recognized as the first Philippine Idol. She went to Indonesia last year to compete for the Asian Idol and received a standing ovation from one of the judges. Although she didn’t win, the judges liked her so much and she really gave her full effort for the said competition.
